Blue Jays Take Title At Tournament
Stanley’s varsity girls’ volleyball team kicked off their season at the Coal Country Tournament in Hazen and Beulah. The team came home with the championship this year.
In pool play, the Blue Jays topped Center-Stanton with scores of 21-11 and 21-12 in their first match. They defeated Beulah in their next match by a score of 21-14 and then played to the cap of 23-22 in the second match. Against Kenmare, they won the first set by a score of 21-14 and lost the second 12-21.
That sent them to the tournament round, where they faced South Prairie first, winning two sets to one with scores of 17-25, 26-24 and 15-12. In the next match, they defeated Berthold in straight sets with scores of 25-16 and 25-23. The championship match saw a rematch against Kenmare, with the Blue Jays coming out on top with scores of 25-21 and 25-22 to claim the title.
Individual stats for the Blue Jays were as follows:
Khloe Jemtrud had 3 kills, 3 aces, 4 assists and 27 digs.
Karley Jemtrud had 9 kills, 15 digs and 3 blocks.
Brenna Wenger had 23 kills, 14 aces, 3 assists, 9 digs and 2 blocks.
Dani Hermanson had 54 kills, 4 aces, 5 assists and 39 digs.
McKenzie Bohrer had 4 aces, 1 assist and 24 digs.
Payton Lystad had 5 kills, 5 digs and 2.5 blocks.
McKenna Jones had 1 kill, 4 assists and 30 digs.
Maycee Copeland had 10 kills, 2 aces, 95 assists, 49 digs and 1.5 blocks.
Jessa Longmuir had 1 dig.
Annie Roise had 20 kills, 3 aces, 1 assist, 6 digs and 7 blocks.
Numbers are strong for this year’s program. The varsity squad is made up of seniors Brenna Wenger, McKenzie Bohrer, McKenna Jones, Maycee Copeland and Annie Roise; juniors Taya Niemitalo, Jozey Sorenson and Payton Lystad; and sophomores Khloe Jemtrud, Karley Jemtrud, Danica Hermanson and Jessa Longmuir. Other athletes this year include junior Jacee Johnson; sophomores Jessy Roise, Ava Stafslien, Marli Honrud, Kennedi Murphy, Taelynn Wollesen and Kendallyn Rose; and freshmen Charlotte Lager, Evy Davis, Scarlett Raasakka, Delaney Dupay, Lilly-Jean Green, Reese Mortensen, Raegan Ostdahl, Harlow Schow and McKayla Whipperman.
The Blue Jays are coached by head coach Nikki Heinle and assistant coaches Leah Lorenz and Kori Taylor. Lilly-Mae Finch is this year’s stat.
