Just My Opinion - by Mary Kilen
Time For A Day Trip
Dale was in Bismarck last week for his annual Municipal Judge’s Conference and got to spend time with Amanda, Zach and the kids from Sunday through Tuesday. Tuesday was Abel’s 9th birthday so he got to share some birthday time and give him his present from us.
Abel also had his last football game on the season this past Saturday. I didn’t have much on my schedule at all last week and for a change my Saturday was even clear. I started thinking it might be time for a day trip to see the kids. Dale teased me that I was feeling left out after he got that time with the kids.
We took off Saturday morning about 9:30 and got there in time for lunch. If you know Dale, you will know it is no surprise that we had lunch at HuHot. He loves to eat there and the kids know they will get to eat there when Papa comes to visit. The fact that they ate there once while he was there earlier in the week made no difference to them.
We hung out for a while and watched the start of the Bison game and then Dale and I, Amanda and Carter made a trip to Sam’s Club because I wanted to pick up things for the Trail of Treats on Halloween. We got back and then we enjoyed some supper to go from Buffalo Wild Wings before heading to St. Mary’s for Abel’s game.
His team came into the game undefeated on the season and they were hoping to end the season the same way. It’s interesting watching these third and fourth graders play tackle football. Their rules are a little different and required multiple explanations from Amanda during the game.
With so many kids on their team, Abel played offense in the first quarter. He’s the center. He played defense in the third quarter. He plays defensive end. He was a little frustrated because he didn’t get a sack for the first time this season, but his team claimed the win and ended their season undefeated.
We took off after the game and headed home, getting back around midnight. It was a long day, but I was so glad we made the trip. It meant a lot to Abel to have both sets of his grandparents in the stands for the final game. We have tried to make it to things for the kids when we can. We’ve been to Carter’s football and basketball games. We’ve been to Jozie’s volleyball tournaments and games. It would be nice if we lived closer and could make all of them, but unfortunately that isn’t possible with the busy schedule at the newspaper.
Meanwhile, the weatherman wasn’t lying about the weather change on Sunday. Amanda and I might have been talking about we were glad Abel wasn’t playing on Sunday.
While I was at the office in the afternoon, the wind was howling and it was raining. I looked at my phone to be told that it was 41 degrees and felt like 30. That continued to drop throughout the rest of the day.
I saw some of Facebook friends posting about seeing snow at their places. I did not see any snowflakes, so I’m going by the theory of if I didn’t see it, it didn’t happen in town.
