Golfers In Action At State Tournament

Heavy rains caused multiple changes to the Class B Boys State Golf Tournament in Carrington last week. With the water on the course, first day action was moved from Tuesday, June 4 to Wednesday, June 5. Because of the water, the first day was also reduced to just nine holes of play. While officials were hopeful that the golfers would be able to compete in a full eighteen holes on Thursday, June 6, conditions were such that it was reduced to twelve holes of play. That meant that rather than 36 holes of golf over the two days, golfers put in just 19 holes of play over the two days.
Oak Grove took home the team title with a total score of 364, followed by Central Cass with 373, Kindred with 378, Dickinson Trinity with 380 and Harvey/Wells County rounding out the top five with 383. The Blue Jays finished in nineteenth with a total score of 424, shooting 166 as a team the first day and 258 on the second day.
Individually, Max Palmer of Bottineau claimed the title with a two day score of 86.
For the Blue Jays, Josh Hetzel finished in a tie for 63rd with a total of 100, shooting 39 the first day and 61 the second. Tyler Gjellstad was in 90th with a total of 103, 44 on the first day and 59 on the second. Caleb Mortensen was tied for 115th with a total of 108, 41 on the first day and 67 on the second. Jaxson Vachal was tied for 135th with a total of 113, 42 on the first day and 71 on the second. Tyke Barstad was 147th with a total of 123, 51 on the first day and 72 on the second. Griffin Wilhelmi was tied for 152nd with a total of 128, 50 on the first day and 78 on the second.
Note: Meet manager added six strokes to each golfer’s score for the second day for the holes not available for use. The second day scores listed above reflect that for the team and the individual golfers.
