Blue Jays Qualify Ten For State

It was individual region tournament time for the Blue Jay wrestlers last week. The girls were in action at Turtle Mountain on Friday, Feb. 13 while the boys were in action in Killdeer on Saturday, Feb. 14. The top eight in each weight bracket earned the right to advance to the State Individual Tournament set for Thursday, Feb. 19 and Friday, Feb. 20 at the Fargodome.
The Blue Jays qualified Kimber Fritel at 112 pounds for the girls individual tournament. The boys qualified Chase Brown at 114 pounds, Louden Haugen at 127 pounds, Cohen Bell at 133 pounds, Regan Gustafson at 139 pounds, Dane Dunham at 145 pounds, Colter Fladeland at 160 pounds, Kane Reep at 189 pounds, Asher Batteiger at 215 pounds, and Levi Uran at 285 pounds.
Girls West Region Tournament
The girls’ west region tournament was held at Turtle Mountain Community High School in Belcourt on Friday, Feb. 13. As a team, Bismarck Legacy was first with 232.5 points, followed by Bismarck with 210.5, Minot with 190.5, Turtle Mountain with 169 and Dickinson rounding out the top five with 146. Stanley was 17th with 27 team points.
Individual results for the Blue Jays were as follows:
At 100 pounds, Kandice Belstad lost her preliminary match on a 17-2 tech fall at 3:31 to Alayna Wolla of Williams County and her next match by fall at 3:29 to Kinleigh Delong of Turtle Mountain to end her tournament action.
At 112 pounds, Kimber Fritel placed seventh. She won her first round match by fall at :48 over Joselyn Snyder of Beulah-Hazen, but lost her quarterfinal match by fall at :37 to Khylie Schlotz of Minot. She came back in the next round to win by fall at :48 over Tess Gross of Bismarck Legacy. In the next round, she lost by fall at 1:57 to Monica Boakye of Minot. In the seventh place match she won by fall at :52 over Jersey Short of Turtle Mountain to take seventh place.
At 118 pounds, River DeTienne lost her first match by fall at 1:11 to Kenleigh Davis of Bismarck Legacy. She lost her next match by fall at 3:38 to Britain Kittelson of Harvey-Wells County to end her tournament action.
At 118 pounds, Aubree Bunner won her first match by fall at 2:38 over Addison Churchill of Bismarck Century. She lost her next match on a 10-8 decision to Vanessa Medina of Williston and her final match by fall at :49 to Jasmine Kukowski of Harvey-Wells County to end her tournament action.
At 124 pounds, McKenzie Bohrer lost her first match by fall at 1:17 to Lyla Roehrich of Williston and her next match by fall at 4:55 to Kaylee Keplin of Turtle Mountain to end her tournament action.
At 130 pounds, Amanda Aguilar lost her first match by fall at 1:10 to Aleiya Cullinan of Bismarck Legacy. She came back to win her next match by fall at 3:52 over Jolee Floyd of Williston, but she lost her next match by fall at 1:35 to Audrey Tofte of Williston to end her tournament action.
At 136 pounds, Mckenna Jones won her first match by fall at 2:43 over Preslea Olson of Williston. She lost her quarterfinal match by fall at :50 to Magie Thielges of Bismarck and her next match by fall at 1:36 to Sava Nelson of Minot to end her tournament action.
At 142 pounds, Natalia Rodriguez lost her first match on a 16-1 tech fall at 2:40 to Marlena Erickson of Bowman County/Beach and her next match by fall at :16 to Tenley Waldo of Bismarck Legacy to end her tournament action.
At 148 pounds, Inaani Wilson lost her first match by fall at 1:09 to Jaycee Entzel of Bismarck Legacy, but came back to win her next match by fall at 1:01 over Meadow Meyer of Williams County. She lost by fall at 2:57 to Makinley Lazorenko of Killdeer in the next round to end her tournament action.
At 155 pounds, JayVuani White Eagle lost her first match by fall at :17 to Bristol Fike of Harvey-Wells County. After a bye in the next round, she lost by fall at :29 to Natalie Meyer of Dickinson in her next match to end her tournament action.
At 170 pounds, Nevaeh Whiteshield lost her first match by fall at :37 to Deysi Krisher of DLB. She came back in the next round to win by fall at 2:18 over Daniela Boixados of Harvey-Wells County. In the next round, she lost by fall at 1:15 to Hope Miller of Jamestown to end her tournament action.
Boys West Region Tournament
The Class B boys’ west region tournament was held at the Killdeer High School on Saturday, Feb. 14. Velva took home first place as a team with 224 points, followed by Hettinger/Scranton with 172.5, Bowman County/Beach with 162.5, Williams County with 145 and DesLacs-Burlington with 127.5. Stanley was seventh with 106.5 team points.

At 107 pounds, Bo Johnson lost his first round match by fall at 2:41 to Ryal Kellenberger of Kenmare-Bowbells. After a bye in the next round, he lost his next match by fall at 5:42 to Brycen Hansen of DLB to end his tournament action.
At 114 pounds, Chase Brown placed seventh. After a first round bye, he lost his quarterfinal match by fall at 1:42 to Alex Leier of Velva. He came back in the next round to win by fall at 4:57 over Roman Akin of Beulah-Hazen, but lost his next match on an 11-3 major decision to Eli Benson of Killdeer. In the seventh place match, he won by fall at 1:41 over Gunner Fricke of New Salem-Almont to take seventh.
At 121 pounds, Trent Bohrer lost his first match by fall at 1:39 to Tyler Fitch of Hettinger/Scranton. After a bye in the next round, he lost by fall at 1:32 to Bridger Kittleson of Harvey-Wells County to end his tournament action.
At 127 pounds, Louden Haugen placed fourth. After a first round bye, he won his quarterfinal match on a 20-3 tech fall at 1:06 over Ryen Noll of Bowman County/Beach. In semifinals, he lost by fall at 4:35 to Josh Ternes of Beulah-Hazen. He came back in the consolation semifinals to win on a 20-3 tech fall at 4:24 over Logan Heid of New Salem-Almont. In the third place match, he lost on a 16-1 tech fall at 4:39 to Isaiah Hackman of Velva to place fourth.
At 133 pounds, Cohen Bell placed second. He won his first round match by fall at 1:10 over Bryson Thomasson of Beulah-Hazen and followed that up with a quarterfinal win by fall at 1:24 over Easton Barstad of Velva. In semifinals, he won on a 17-2 tech fall at 5:42 over Afton Ost of Bishop Ryan. In the championship match, he lost on a 6-4 decision to Hayes Weinberger of New Salem-Almont to take second.
At 139 pounds, Regan Gustafson placed fourth. After a first round bye, he won his quarterfinal match on a 17-2 tech fall at 4:00 over Choutae Gerhardt of New Salem-Almont. He lost his semifinal match on a 12-3 major decision to Kyler Schalesky of Hettinger/Scranton. He came back to win his consolation semifinal on a 19-1 tech fall at 4:00 over Broderyk Mohl of Beulah-Hazen. In the third place match, he lost on a 10-2 major decision to Cutter Ouradnik of Bowman County/Beach to take fourth.
At 145 pounds, Dane Dunham placed eighth. After a first round bye, he lost his quarterfinal match by fall at 4:28 to Nathanial Dobitz of Hettinger/Scranton. He came back in the next round to win on a 15-13 decision over Kolt Lemer of Harvey-Wells County, but lost by fall at 4:43 to Kanon Sperry of Bowman County/Beach. In the seventh place match, he lost by fall at 3:09 to Lleyton Spear of Kenmare-Bowbells to take eighth.
At 152 pounds, Kaleb Belstad lost his first round match by fall at 1:03 to Isaiah Dobbs of Bowman County/Beach. After a bye in the next round, he lost his next match by fall at 2:17 to Gage Holter of Kenmare-Bowbells to end his tournament action.
At 160 pounds, Colter Fladeland placed seventh. He won his first match by fall at 3:13 over Zakary Swift of Beulah-Hazen, but lost his quarterfinal match by fall at 2:31 to Lexton Smith of Velva. In the next round, he won by fall at 1:04 over Matthew Bollom of New Salem-Almont. In the next round, he lost on a 3-2 decision to Jack Smith of DLB. In the seventh place match, he won on a 9-6 decision over Liam Albrecht of Killdeer to place seventh.
At 189 pounds, Kane Reep placed third. After a first round bye, he lost his quarterfinal match on a 6-2 decision to Eli Buee of DLB. He came back to win his next match by fall at :43 over Tucker Patterson of Kenmare-Bowbells. He won his next match on a medical forfeit by Kiefer Finley of Harvey-Wells County and his consolation semifinal on a medical forfeit by Wyatt Lapierre of Killdeer. In the third placed match, he won on an 11-3 major decision over Brodie Sott of Hettinger/Scranton to take third.
At 215 pounds, Asher Batteiger placed eighth. After a first round bye, he lost his quarterfinal match by fall at :27 to Christian Mertz of Harvey-Wells County. He came back to win his next match on a 21-9 major decision over Michael Bosch of Linton-HMB, but lost in the next round by fall at 5:25 to Tucker Turbiville of Bowman County/Beach. In the seventh place match, he lost by fall at 5:21 to Gavin Davidson of Williams County to place eighth.
At 285 pounds, Levi Uran placed fifth. After a first round bye, he won his quarterfinal match by fall at 5:00 over Delaney Feldman of Kenmare-Bowbells. In semifinals, he lost by fall at 1:37 to Cade Okeson of Velva. In the consolation semifinals, he lost on a 4-1 decision to Anthony Hallett of Beulah-Hazen. In the fifth place match, he won by fall at 1:31 over Logan Schimelfenig of Harvey-Wells County to take fifth.
State Tournament
The State Tournament is set for Thursday, Feb. 19 through Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Fargodome.
Thursday starts the individual tournament with weigh ins and skin checks at 8:00 a.m. First round action starts at 10:00 a.m., followed by quarterfinals and the first round of wrestlebacks. Semifinals are set for 5:00 p.m. Friday’s action again starts at 8 a.m. with the weigh ins and skin checks. Second round wrestlebacks start at 10 a.m., followed by third round wrestlebacks and consolation semifinals. That will be followed by the placing rounds for places third through eighth. The Hall of Fame inductions are set for 3:30 p.m. Finals are set to start at 4:30 p.m.
Saturday will be the team duals with weigh ins and skin checks at 8:00 a.m. The Class B boys and girls quarterfinals start at 10:00 a.m. followed by the Class A quarterfinals and Class B and girls consolation semifinals. Semifinals and placing matches will follow with championship matches set to start at 4:00 p.m.
