Blue Jays Qualify Eight For State

The Blue Jays girls and boys wrestlers were in action last week at the regional individual qualifiers. The girls were in Watford City on Friday, Feb. 14 while the boys were in Killdeer on Saturday, Feb. 15. The top eight wrestlers in each weight class would earn the right to advance to the state tournament set for Thursday, Feb. 20 through Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Fargodome.
The boys qualified eight wrestlers with Louden Haugen placing second at 114 pounds, Regan Gustafson placing seventh at 121 pounds, Cohen Bell placing second at 127 pounds, Kane Reep placing sixth at 139 pounds, Colter Fladeland placing fourth at 152 pounds, Trey Bohmbach placing second at 189 pounds, Griffin Wilhelmi placing fourth at 215 pounds, and Levi Uran placing seventh at 285 pounds.
Girls West Region
The girls’ west region tournament was held on Friday, Feb. 14 at the Watford City High School. The girls’ tournaments include both Class A and Class B schools. Minot took home the team title with 205 points, followed by Bismarck Legacy with 203.5, Bismarck with 189.5, Dickinson with 161.5 and Mandan rounding out the top five with 137.5. The Blue Jays finished in 20th with 8 team points.

At 100 pounds, River DeTienne lost her first match by fall a 1:11 to Brooklyn Ost of Minot. She won her next match by fall at 1:52 over Tori Jacobson of Bowman County/Beach, but then lost her next match by fall at 2:31 to Sari Sorenson of Watford City to end her tournament action.
At 106 pounds, Molly Danks lost her first match by fall at 1:07 to Addison Yates of Harvey-Wells County and her next match by fall at 1:44 to Lucia Cheverie of Dickinson to end her tournament action.
At 106 pounds, Kimber Fritel won her first match by fall at :55 over Aubrey Sorenson of Watford City. She lost her quarterfinal match by fall at 5:00 to Taley Michel of Kenmare/Bowbells/Burke Central and her next match by fall at 3:31 to Kierstyn Nevels of Minot to end her tournament action.
At 112 pounds, Ava Wade lost her first match by fall at :50 to Quory Whiteford of Williams County and her second match by fall at 1:46 to Sicily Kula of Bowman County/Beach to end her tournament action.
At 130 pounds, Amanda Aguilar lost her first match by fall at 1:42 to Kendra Azure of Turtle Mountain and her next match by fall at :29 to Kashtyn Bredahl of DLB to end her tournament action.
At 136 pounds, McKenna Jones won her first match on a 13-4 major decision over Mya Deford of Williston. She lost her next match by fall at 1:36 to Phoebe Wade of Bismarck and her last match by fall at 5:08 to Alicia Asongkeng of Bismarck Legacy to end her tournament action.
At 148 pounds, Inaani Wilson lost her first match by fall at :26 to Julia Araujo of Bismarck. After a bye in the next round, she lost her next match by fall at 1:20 to Jazmine Lindberg of Williams County to end her tournament action.
Boys West Region
The boys’ west region tournament was held on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Killdeer High School. Velva took home the team title with 212 points, followed by New Salem-Almont with 180.5, Williams County with 179.5, and Bowman County/Beach and Stanley tied for fourth with 123.5.

At 107 pounds, Chase Brown lost his first match on a 16-0 tech fall to Chase Becher of New Salem-Almont. After a bye in the next round, he lost his last match on an 8-7 sudden victory overtime score to Cam Peterson of Kenmare-Bowbells to end his tournament action.
At 114 pounds, Louden Haugen placed second. After a first round bye, he won by fall at 1:32 over Brody Ptacek of Linton-HMB in quarterfinals and by fall at 1:45 over Peyton Seay of Bishop Ryan in semifinals. In the championship match, he lost on a 14-9 decision to Tristian Miller of Williams County to place second.
At 121 pounds, Regan Gustafson placed seventh. He won his first round match by fall at 3:33 over Brody Jones of Harvey-Wells County. He lost his quarterfinal match by fall at 4:36 to Hayes Weinberger of New Salem-Almont. He came back to win his next match by fall at 1:04 over Afton Ost of Bishop Ryan, but lost his next match on a 12-3 major decision to Nick Dobitz of Hettinger/Scranton. He won the seventh place match on a medical forfeit by Cale Schwartz of Bowman County/Beach.
At 127 pounds, Cohen Bell placed second. He had a bye in the first round and then won his quarterfinal match on a 16-1 tech fall over Michael Twinn of Williams County. He won his semifinal match on a 19-1 tech fall over Riley Hasbrouck of Hettinger/Scranton. In the first place match, he lost on a 4-1 decision to Charlie Irwin of New Salem-Almont to take second place.
At 133 pounds, Brayden Fritel lost his first match by fall at 1:54 to Cutter Ouradnik of Bowman County/Beach. He came back to win his next match on a 15-0 tech fall over William Leppell of Velva. In the next round, he lost on a 13-1 major decision to Paul Melin of Kenmare-Bowbells-Burke Central to end his tournament action.
At 139 pounds, Kane Reep placed sixth. He won his first round match by fall at 3:33 over Gage Holter of KBBC. In quarterfinals, he lost by fall at :43 to Brextyn Yanish of Velva. He came back to win his next match by fall at :59 over Jamison Nelson of DLB and the next on a 13-4 major decision over Hudson Buchholz-Casson of New Salem-Almont. In consolation semifinals, he lost on a 14-0 major decision to Zachary Spain of Bishop Ryan. In the fifth place match, he lost on a 15-5 major decision to Walker Sheldon of Williams County to place sixth.
At 145 pounds, Dane Dunham lost his first round match by fall at 5:55 to Daniel Hoff of Bowman County/Beach. After a bye in the next round, he lost his next match by fall at 3:44 to Colton Becher of New Salem-Almont to end his tournament action.
At 152 pounds, Colter Fladeland placed fourth. After a first round bye, he won his quarterfinal match on a 4-0 decision over Landan Spear of KBBC. He lost his semifinal match by fall at :41 to Trenton Klatt of New Salem-Almont. He won his consolation semifinal match on a 4-3 decision over Isaiah Dobbs of Bowman County/Beach. In the third place match, he lost on a 5-3 decision to Raider Barstad of Velva to take fourth place.
At 160 pounds, Gage Mudderman lost his first round match by fall at :55 to Gavin Engwicht of New Salem-Almont. After a bye in the next round, he lost his next match by fall at 2:48 to Wyatt LaPierre of Killdeer to end his tournament action.
At 172 pounds, Ace Johnson lost his first round match by fall at 2:53 to Eli Buee of DLB. After a bye in the next round, he lost his next match by fall at 2:43 to Clayton Heins of New Salem-Almont to end his tournament action.
At 189 pounds, Trey Bohmbach placed second. He had a first round bye and then won his quarterfinal match on an 8-0 major decision over Noah Werner of Velva. He won his semifinal match on a 4-0 decision over William Roundy of Killdeer. In the championship match, he lost on a 9-3 decision to Christian Mertz of Harvey-Wells County to place second.
At 215 pounds, Griffin Wilhelmi placed fourth. After a first round bye, he won his quarterfinal match by fall at 1:41 over Jayden Foss of Velva. In semifinals, he lost by fall at 4:52 to Carter Engebretson of Harvey-Wells County. He won his consolation semifinal due to a medical forfeit by Jermaine Gisi of Beulah-Hazen. In the third place match, he lost on a 4-0 decision to CL Weinberger of New Salem-Almont to take fourth.
At 285 pounds, Levi Uran placed seventh. He won his first round match by fall at :12 over Elijah Timm of Hettinger/Scranton. In quarterfinals, he lost on a 15-0 tech fall to Porter Johnson of Harvey-Wells County. He came back in the next round to win on a 9-0 major decision over Wyatt Roberts of Bowman County/Beach, but then lost his next match by fall at 1:43 to Dane Jepson of Killdeer. In the seventh place match he won on a 13-8 decision over Delaney Feldman of KBBC to take seventh place.
