Blue Jay Wrestlers Compete At State Cohen Bell Claims Title At 133

The Stanley Blue Jays sent ten wrestlers to the Class B Boys Individual and Girls Individual State Tournaments at the Fargodome on Thursday, Feb. 19 and Friday, Feb. 20.
Individually, Stanley’s Cohen Bell claimed his first state title at 133 pounds. Levi Uran placed fourth at 285 pounds. Louden Haugen placed fifth at 127 pounds.
Lisbon took home the boys’ team title with 169 points, followed by Velva with 153.5, South Border with 118.5, Oakes  with 104. 5 and Carrington rounding out the top five with 96.5 team points. The Blue Jays finished thirteenth as a team with 56 points.
Bismarck Legacy took home the girls’ title with 143.5 points, followed by Minot with 118, Bismarck with 117.5, Lisbon with 114.5 and Pembina County North rounding out the top five with 91 team points. Stanley finished in 38th with 1 team point.
The tournament also recognizes academic all-state wrestlers with Asher Batteiger, Cohen Bell, Chase Brown, Regan Gustafson, Kane Reep and Kimber Fritel all earning those honors.
Stanley’s Cohen Bell was also one of four athletes nominated for Class B Senior Athlete of the Year, with the award going to Sawyer Owens of Hillsboro/Central Valley. The Class B Boys Coach of the Year award went to Arlan Anderson of Williams County.
Individual results for the Blue Jays were as follows:
At 114 pounds, Chase Brown met up with #7 seed Nash Nitschke of Ellendale-Edgeley-Kulm, losing on a 7-2 decision. In the next round of wrestlebacks, he faced Gunner Fricke of New Salem-Almont, losing on a 6-1 decision to end his tournament action.
At 127 pounds, Louden Haugen came in as the number seven seed and placed fifth in the tournament. He lost his first round match by fall at 1:51 to Joey Heyd of LaMoure-Litchfield/Marion, but rebounded in the next round with a win on a 17-2 tech fall at 2:00 over  Brody Jones of Harvey-Wells County. He followed that up with a 5-2 decision win over #8 seeded Easten Baumgartner of Napoleon. In the next round, he won on a 6-3 decision in sudden victory overtime over the #4 seed Isaiah Hackman of Velva. In the consolation semifinal, he met up with Joey Heyd again, losing by fall at 3:34. That sent him to the fifth place match, which he won on a medical forfeit by Josh Ternes of Beulah-Hazen to take fifth.
At 133 pounds, Cohen Bell came in as the number one seed and took home the title. In the first round, he won on a 21-5 tech fall at 4:52 over Afton Ost of Bishop Ryan. In quarterfinals, he won on a 10-0  major decision over the #8 seed Greyson Lyons of Lisbon. In semifinals, he won by fall at 1:43 over the #4 seed Paul Melin of Kenmare-Bowbells. That sent him to the championship match, which was a rematch of the region championship against #3 seed Hayes Weinberger of New Salem-Almont. This match went to sudden victory overtime with Bell winning by a score of 7 to 4 to claim the state title.
At 139 pounds, Regan Gustafson came in as the number eight seed. He lost his first match by fall at 3:03 to Gabriel Dumas of Grafton. In the next round, he lost by fall at 3:14 to Logan Nielson of May-Port-CG to end his tournament action.
At 145 pounds, Dane Dunham met up with the number two seed Griffin Greenley of Lisbon in the first round, losing on a 17-1 tech fall at 2:27. In the next round, he met up with the #7 seed Westen Baumgartner of Napoleon  G-S, losing on a 13-2 major decision to end his tournament action.
At 160 pounds, Colter Fladeland met up with the number eight seed Lexton Smith of Velva in the first round, losing by fall at 1:07. In the next round, he faced Trevor Dalley of Bowman County/Beach, losing on an 8-2 decision to end his tournament action.
At 189 pounds, Kane Reep faced the number six seed Ryer Muske of Valley City in the first round, losing on a 4-0 decision. In the next round, he met up with Riley Lacina of Lisbon, losing on a 10-3 decision to end his tournament action.
At 215 pounds, Asher Batteiger faced the number one seed and eventual state champion Christian Mertz of Harvey-Wells County in the first round, losing by fall at 1:00. In the next round, he faced #8 seeded Jayden Foss of Velva, losing by fall at 1:44 to end his tournament action.
At 285 pounds, Levi Uran came into the tournament seeded sixth and took home fourth place in the tournament. He lost his first round match by fall at 1:59 to Kayden Williams of Northern Cass. He came back in the next round to with by fall at :34 over Skyler Hoff-Wald of Linton-HMB and followed that up with an 11-2 major decision win over #4 seeded Seth Irey of Ellendale-Edgeley-Kulm. In the next round of wrestlebacks, he won by fall at 3:51 over Hunter Thorvilson of Larimore. In the consolation semifinal, he won by fall at :47 over the #3 seed Braden Jundt of DLB. In the third place match, he lost on a 5-2 decision to Anthony Hallett of Beulah-Hazen to take fourth.
In the girls’ tournament that included both Class A and B girls, Kimber Fritel wrestled at 112 pounds. In her first round match, she faced the number two seed Taryn Roesler of Kindred, losing by fall at 5:34. In the next round, she won on an 8-6 decision over the #7 seed Autumn Huber of New Salem-Almont. In the next round, she lost by fall at :24 to the #8 seed Sydney Huber of Bismarck Century to end her tournament action.
