Blue Jay Girls Win Two

Stanley’s varsity girls’ basketball team had two games on their schedule last week. On Tuesday, Jan. 17, the Blue Jays hosted Kenmare, coming out with the 53 to 50 win. They traveled to New Town on Saturday, Jan. 21, posting the 44-30 victory.

At home on Tuesday, Jan. 17, the Blue Jays hosted the Kenmare Honkers in a District 16 matchup. Stanley held a four point lead at the end of the first quarter, with Kenmare cutting that lead to one at the half. The Honkers held a two point lead at the end of the third quarter. The Blue Jays won the game at the buzzer on a steal and three-point shot by Clancy Hornberger to take the 53 to 50 victory.
Head coach Heath Hetzel said, “Tuesday’s win was a big win in our district against Kenmare. It’s going to be a tight race to see who gets the number one seed in District 16.”
As a team, Stanley made 14 of their 30 two point attempts and 5 of their 19 three point attempts. They converted 10 of their 24 free throws. The Honkers made 17 of their 27 two point and 4 of their 18 three point attempts. They made 4 of their 11 free throw attempts.
The Blue Jays had 15 offensive and 17 defensive rebounds. They had 10 assists and 15 steals. They committed 16 turnovers. Kenmare had 10 offensive and 24 defensive rebounds. They had 15 assists, 10 steals, 3 blocks and committed 18 turnovers.
The Blue Jays were led by Ava Schuster with 24 points, followed by Hadley DeTienne and Clancy Hornberger with 9 each, Bethany Enander with 6, and Mattiea Stone with 5.
Ava Schuster had 8 rebounds, followed by Bethany Enander with 7, Clancy Hornberger with 6, Hadley DeTienne and Mattiea Stone with 3 each, and Molly Lund with 2.
Ava Schuster had 3 assists, followed by Bethany Enander, Molly Lund and Clancy Hornberger with 2 each, and Hadley DeTienne with 1.
Ava Schuster had 5 steals, followed by Clancy Hornberger 4, and Hadley DeTienne and Bethany Enander with 3 each.
