Blue Jay Girls Defeat Lady Eagles

Stanley’s varsity girls’ basketball team finished their regular season with a win over the New Town Eagles in New Town on Monday, Feb. 16. The Blue Jays got out to a fast start, holding an eleven point lead at the end of the first quarter on their way to the 54 to 33 win.
Head coach Kendell Hunt said, “We finished the regular season on a high note with a solid win. We came out with a ton of fire in the first quarter, built a nice lead, and set the tone right away. Our defense stepped up huge the entire game. Our on-ball defense was some of the best we’ve seen this season.”
As a team, the Blue Jays made 12 of their 27 two point and 7 of their 19 three point attempts. They converted 9 of their 15 free throws. That compared to 8 of 36 two point, 3 of 24 three point, and 8 of 16 free throw attempts for the Eagles.
Stanley had 9 offensive and 28 defensive rebounds. They had 11 assists, 15 steals and 5 blocks. They committed 25 turnovers. New Town had 22 offensive and 14 defensive rebounds. They had 4 assists, 13 steals, 1 block and committed 22 turnovers.
Taya Niemitalo led the Blue Jays with 11 points, followed by Annie Roise with 10, Kiplee Nordloef with 7, CeeJay Bohmbach with 6, Jacee Johnson and Kennedi Murphy with 5 each, Teigan Moe and Payton Lystad with 3 each, and Evy Davis and Maycee Copeland with 2 each.
Annie Roise had 9 rebounds, followed by Taya Niemitalo with 6, Payton Lystad with 4, Evy Davis, Jacee Johnson, Maycee Copeland and Kiplee Nordloef with 3 each, CeeJay Bohmbach with 2, and Carly Rismon with 1.
Taya Niemitalo had 4 assists, followed by Annie Roise with 3, Kennedi Murphy with 2, and Jacee Johnson and Kiplee Nordloef with 1 each.
Kennedi Murphy had 5 steals, followed by CeeJay Bohmbach and Annie Roise with 3 each, Taya Niemitalo with 2, and Jacee Johnson and Kiplee Nordloef with 1 each.
Taya Niemitalo and Maycee Copeland each had 2 blocks, followed by Kennedi Murphy with 1.
New Town was led by Journey Spotted Bear with 11 points, followed by Shayla Hogan with 8, Elyssa Red Bear with 7, Takiyah Bad Hawk with 6, and Isabel Flores with 1.

The Blue Jays entered region tournament action on Monday, Feb. 23, facing the number one seed South Prairie, dropping their game with a score of 44 to 85. Bottineau topped Dunseith, Turtle Mountain bested Nedrose and Rugby defeated DLB. That set up Tuesday’s semifinal games with winners facing off in the region championship game on Thursday, Feb. 26. The second and third place teams advanced to state qualifier games in Bismarck on Saturday, Feb. 28. Teams are looking for the right to advance to the State Tournament set for March 5 through 7 at the Jamestown Civic Center.
