Blue Jay Boys Post Wins Over Dunseith And New Town

The Blue Jay boys’ basketball team had two games on their schedule last week. On Tuesday, Feb. 11 they hosted Dunseith, posting the 79 to 50 win. On the road on Friday, Feb. 14, they also posted the win over the New Town Eagles with a score of 42 to 36.

At home on Tuesday, Feb. 11, the Blue Jays hosted the Dunseith Dragons. They got out to a quick start, holding a seven point lead at the end of the first quarter, adding to their lead in each of the remaining quarters on their way to the 79 to 50 win.
Head coach Kory Anderson said, “The boys started the game off hot! We jumped out early and never looked back. I thought the boys did a great job trying to push the pace a little faster then we typically do. We rebounded well and contested most shots. It was one of our better defensive games of the season.”
As a team, Stanley made 24 of their 40 two point and 7 of their 21 three point shots. They converted 10 of their 11 free throws. Dunseith made 10 of their 28 two point, 7 of their 25 three point and 9 of their 12 free throw attempts.
The Blue Jays had 12 offensive and 27 defensive rebounds. They had 20 assists, 4 steals, 6 blocks and committed just 5 turnovers. The Dragons had 8 offensive and 17 defensive rebounds, 12 assists, 4 steals 5 blocks and committed 8 turnovers.
Drake Schlosser led the team with 35 points, followed by Ben Hynek with 16, Austin Kanenwisher and Bennett Larson with 12 each, and Caleb Mortensen and Kade Snyder with 2 each.
Bennett Larson had 13 rebounds, followed by Drake Schlosser with 7, Ben Hynek and Jevon Johnson with 5 each, and Austin Kanenwisher, Caleb Mortensen and Kade Snyder with 2 each.
Bennett Larson had 8 assists, followed by Kade Snyder with 5, Jevon Johnson with 3, and Drake Schlosser and Austin Kanenwisher with 2 each.
Ben Hynek had 2 steals, followed by Drake Schlosser and Jevon Johnson with 1 each.

Stanley vs. New Town
The Blue Jays traveled to New Town on Friday, Feb. 14 to face the Eagles. Stanley held a seven point lead at the end of the first quarter with New Town cutting the lead to six at the half. That would remain the difference in the game as the Blue Jays went on to win by a score of 42 to 36.
Coach Anderson said, “New Town is a very good team. They have one of the best point guards in the region and area. Drake did a great job on him as we held him to 4 points on the night. Both our bigs played well and controlled the paint. Kade Snyder was big for us defensively as well as effort. Austin Kanenwisher also played well and made some big shots for us while guarding an elite scorer for New Town. Again, we played very well defensively. We had 18 turnovers and will have to continue to work at getting better at ball security as 18 turnovers during the region tournament will be too much.”
As a team, Stanley made 17 of their 34 two point and 2 of their 13 three point attempts. They made 2 of their 6 free throw attempts. New Town converted 14 of their 35 two point, 2 of their 19 three point, and 2 of their 4 free throw attempts.
The Blue Jays had 13 offensive and 28 defensive rebounds. They had 12 assists, 3 steals and 5 blocks. They committed 18 turnovers. The Eagles had 5 offensive and 22 defensive rebounds. They had 8 assists, 13 steals and 1 block. They committed 6 turnovers.
