Stanley Students Shine At Rodeo Finals

Stanley Students Shine At Rodeo Finals

Three Stanley High School students competed at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, WY in July.
Trey Bohmbach was competing in team roping with his partner Hayden Hutchinson, steer wrestling and calf roping. CeeJay Bohmbach was competing in barrel racing. Tylie Johnson was competing in the Queen Competition.
For Trey Bohmbach, he was returning to the NHSFR for the fourth time. He also qualified for the junior high finals in 2021 and 2019. As a senior, he competed in steer wrestling, team roping and calf roping again this year.
Trey and his partner Hayden came home this year with a Reserve Champion title in the team roping. They were tenth in their first round. In that second round, Trey says he knew they would need a good time to make it to the short go and the team did just that. They entered the short go which is made up of the top twenty performers in second place. They finished in second place, just two one-hundredths of a second off the national title time. While he says that was disappointing, it was awesome at the same time. This was his first time making the short go in the NHSFR and was a great way to round out his senior season.
As for his other events, he says that steer wrestling his first round did not go well and in the second, his horse failed him for the first time in four years. He had drawn a great steer and it could have been just what he needed to move on. As for calf roping, he was long in the first round and did not have a great second round either.
With that second place finish at nationals, he and his teammate earned a buckle, saddle pads and a scholarship from Cinch. As a pair, they also earned $3,400 from a team roping jackpot at the NHSFR.
He looks back at the national’s experience saying that while it was disappointing to not win the title, there are still a number of kids that do not even get the chance to compete or make the short go. He says he is blessed to do it and end up as good as they did.
He also says that Team ND did an awesome job, coming home as the District 3 champions and placing sixth overall as a team. There were several of them that made a mark during the rodeo.
Bohmbach heads to Gillette, WY next year for college, where he will be part of the college rodeo team. He will compete in the same three events. His new teammate will be a familiar face as he teams up with his cousin, Tel Sorenson, someone he has roped with quite a bit in the past.
Until he heads off, he will continue competing on the pro rodeo circuit as well as some of the amateur rodeos when it fits his schedule. He has already improved on his earnings on the pro circuit this year.

Trey’s sister, CeeJay, made a return trip to national high school finals as well. She qualified last year in breakaway and barrel racing and returned to compete in barrel racing again this year. She qualified for the junior high national finals in 2021 in barrel racing.
Her runs this year did not go the way she would have liked at the NHSFR, but she was still fortunate to be one of those athletes who qualified. Her horse was not used to the course in the first round and in the second round, she was giving it everything she had because she knew she had nothing to lose. Unfortunately, they tipped a barrel, ending her action at the rodeo.
She also competed in some jackpots with her breakaway horse while at the NHSFR.
During the trip, the family also took some time out for fun, including a trip to a lake in Utah, which CeeJay said was a really good time and included very pretty scenery.
CeeJay will be a senior this year at Stanley High School. This year, she has competed in barrel racing, breakaway and team roping. Besides the high school rodeo events, she  competes on the NDRA rodeo circuit and the MHA rodeos, mostly in barrel and racing and breakaway.
Trey and CeeJay are the children of Jed and Jodi Bohmbach.
Stanley’s Tylie Johnson competed for the title of NHSFR Queen. She was asked by board members to represent and compete for the ND High School Rodeo Association Queen.
She says that national competition was really fun, but also stressful.  She says that she met a lot of really good people. Tylie placed 15th out of 43 competitors. Their competitions included interview, speech, modeling, horsemanship and impromptu. Their competitions were held before the rodeo finals began. They competed from July 8 through 12 and then had to wait until the final day of the rodeo for the winners to be announced. She said that they watched the rodeo and spent time doing random things until winners were announced on Saturday before the short-go of the finals.
She is grateful to Dawn and Trent Martin who allowed her to use their horse, Dillon, for the horsemanship competition. As the ND High School Rodeo Queen, she will go to rodeos and represent the association. She will hold her state title until June of next year when a new queen will be crowned at the state finals.
Tylie will be a senior this year at Stanley High School. She has competed in junior high and high school rodeo with events including barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway, team roping and goat tying. She is the daughter of Bobbi Jo and Kyle Johnson.
