SHS Competes At State Mock Trials

SHS Competes At State Mock Trials

2025 court is adjourned! Stanley competed for the first time at the High School Mock Trial Competition in Bismarck. The competition was hosted by the State Bar Association of North Dakota at the Burleigh County Courthouse on Saturday, March 22nd.
These seniors put in the work. Over the course of three months, the Stanley Mock Trial Team analyzed a second-degree murder case and put on a stellar performance in the courtroom against other teams. From expert testimony, offering evidence, objections, and opening/closing arguments, these seniors should be proud of what they accomplished and how they represented the Blue Jays.

The state team was represented by Caleb Mortensen, Harley DeTienne, Avery Ellis, Aubrey Jordan, Ella Mortensen, and Max Jackson. For the defense, Logan Neset, Max Jackson, Avery Ellis, Jonathan Chavez, Tawni Nohr, and Harley DeTienne. The team was coached by forensic science teacher, Nick Peterson. Scoring judges selected Ella Mortensen as the top witness and Avery Ellis as the top attorney for the Stanley team.
Over the course of competition prep, the team was blessed to have the assistance from numerous individuals who volunteered time in providing feedback and insight. Recognition to Wade Enget, Amber Fiesel and Madison Rogers of the Mountrail County Courthouse who helped with a practice trial. The team was also fortunate enough to work alongside attorney coaches from Pringle & Herigstad, P.C. in Minot. Debra Hoffarth, Ryan Sandberg and Ashleigh Ensrud volunteered their time to help the team with evidence and testimony.
A bit about the High School Mock Trial competition. HSMT is an exciting law-related education program that introduces students to the American legal system. The program brings together attorneys, judges, and students from across the State. Students learn the details of the trial process and procedure, improve skills in communication, reasoning, critical thinking, and teamwork. Students are also given a rare opportunity to work side by side with attorneys and judges.
