Mountrail County 4-H Project Day

The Mountrail County 4-H program held the first of two scheduled project days on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Mountrail County South Complex.
In the morning, 4-H’ers were “bugging out” with an entomology project. Rebecca Hager, Fort Berthold 4-H extension agent, brought a hands-on activity designed to spark scientific curiously and teach essential skills of collection, preserving and presenting insect specimens. She had a variety of bugs and insects for those attending to see, to help them understand the tiny creatures that shape our ecosystem.
The afternoon was time for a grain sample cleaning project. Julie Woodbury was helping youth dive into the science and skill of preparing grain samples for display.
Those participating were able to learn why grain cleaning samples are important and how that is used in the ag industry. They learned to use a grain sieve and how to hand-pick samples to finish the process. They also learned about sample displaying for Achievement Days, the State Fair and State Crop Show.
Another project day is set for November 15. This day will start with a morning session on scrapbooking and an afternoon session on dog grooming and care. You can preregister for these events by contacting the Mountrail County Extension Office.
