Horse Contest Held In Stanley

Horse Contest Held In Stanley

Mountrail County hosted a Horse Contest at the Mountrail County Fair Building in Stanley.
Several teams from across the state came and participated in two contests.
The first contest was live Horse Judging. There were six classes of four horses. Two Halter classes: Percheron Mares and Appaloosa Geldings, and four Riding Performance Classes: Western Pleasure, Reining, Horsemanship, and Ranch Riding. The students decide which order to place the four contestants in each class and their score is compared to the “official” score determined by a committee of three adult judges.
After the classes are concluded, the students will take a few minutes to prepare and give two sets of oral reasons to one of the official judges explaining why they placed the class the way they did.
These scores are added up to determine overall placings in the categories and overall high individual and teams.
The Mountrail County Contest organizers Ilene Enerson and Katie Woodbury would like to give a big thank you to the volunteer riders and handlers who provided horses. Thank you, Carrie Marschner, Alli Nelson, Doug Vesey, Monica Sem, Cooper Sem, Ilene Enerson, Julie Campbell and Moore Family with Kyloe Appaloosa’s, John and Julie Woodbury with the Percheron Draft Mares for making the judging classes possible.
We would also like to thank our officials committee, Logan Lapica, Paige Brummund and Julie Campbell.
The other contest the students participated in was Horse Quizbowl. Two teams of four students face off with buzzers and have ten seconds to buzz in first and answer questions on anything related to Equine studies. Examples of these questions are “How many bones are in the horse’s body?”, “What is another name for Strangles in horses?”, “What are the baby teeth, also known as milk teeth, called?”. During phase one, they go head to head, three questions each. Phase two is called “Toss Up” and anyone can answer from either team. They are awarded points for correct answers and the elimination bracket until one team is left as the winner.
The contest ran three different rooms so that six junior teams and three senior teams could complete the brackets. We would like to thank our moderators and scorekeepers for their time, Jim Hennessy, Sara Brewer, Paige Brummund, Julie Campbell, Kelly Shaefer, Barb Rice, and Bailey Hawbaker. We also appreciate the other county coaches helping fill in where needed and Kathy Baer for providing additional buzzers. It was an exciting event and the youth did an excellent job!
