Just My Opinion - By Mary Kilen
Congratulations Trey and Hayden and Tylie!
The National High School Finals Rodeo wrapped up over the weekend with Team North Dakota making a good showing. As a team, they finished sixth in the world as the national finals include competitors from other countries. Both the women’s and men’s team finished seventh in the world to combine for that finish. They combined that with a Division 3 Championship for their points total.
I watched to see how some Stanley area contestants were doing and boy we should be super proud of those kids! They compete against the best in the world and they showed up!
Stanley’s Trey Bohmbach and his team roping partner Hayden Hutchinson made the short go and finished as the reserve champions this year. The pair has roped together for seven years and have qualified for nationals multiple times.
Trey also competed in the tie down roping and steer wrestling. His sister CeeJay competed in the barrel racing.
Stanley High School’s Tylie Johnson competed in the rodeo queen pageant, finishing 15th out of 43 contestants. I don’t know if we have ever had anyone from our area compete in this event.
I can’t wait to talk to these athletes when they get home and be able to write about their experiences!
A First Trip To The Fair
Dale and I were able to spend some time at the State Fair on Sunday so he could get his first fix of fair food. Jada offered to come puppy sit for us so that we wouldn’t have to worry about leaving Buddy home alone for that long. If he wasn’t so darn sure he’s all better and constantly trying to jump up on furniture and do all the other things he’s not supposed to be doing yet we could leave him for those hours.
We took off around noon and got there in time for “lunch”. For Dale that was fleischkuechle and some bacon cheese fries. I, on the other hand, avoided anything remotely healthy and went with a caramel and sea salt donut from Amish Annie Donuts and a dragon fruit lemonade.
We wandered a little bit and then sat to watch A Hard Day’s Night on one of the free stages. This group of talented musicians have performed yearly at the Sibyl Center in Stanley and are always a crowd favorite. We got to see their set with the early Beatles music. They were going to do my favorite set with the music from the Sgt. Pepper’s era later, but I knew we wouldn’t still be there at 9:00.
After that we watched the MHA Dancers on their free stage for awhile. This group of talented dancers has been performing at the fair for several years now. They demonstrate the different types of Native American dances and tell the stories to share their culture.
Then it was time to wander through the commercial buildings for a while and see what things I just can’t live without. I didn’t buy much this trip, but I know we’ll be back a couple of times again with Jozie.
We grabbed one more snack. Dale needed ice cream, but I couldn’t find his favorite ice cream stand. I might have missed it and will have to look a little harder on Tuesday when we go meet up with Amanda and the kids and then bring Joz home. He found something similar but declared it wasn’t “quite the same”.
We met up with Zach and Carter to drop off a couple things before we headed home. They were going to see Jelly Roll along with 18,000 of their closest friends. They got to the fairgrounds early enough to grab something to eat and then wait to get in for the concert. They had reserved seats, kind of up in the nosebleed section, but at least they were not part of the sea of humanity that was standing room only that night.
I’m not going to lie, I’m a little jealous that I didn’t go with them. I love Jelly Roll’s music and besides putting on a heck of a show, his own story and willingness to give back to the communities he visits gives you insight into the kind of man he has become.
And Just Because We’re All Getting A Little Older
I found this post attributed to The Ultimate ‘80s Page and I laughed. I’m not sure I’ve said all of these, but I have said most of them!
This was titled “Things You Say After 40”. I’m not sure but I think 40 might be a little young for some of these, but they are definitely up there for those of us in my age bracket!
Where the heck is my phone?
How did I get this bruise?
This isn’t my password either? What the heck?
How do they expect you to read this small print?
Where did I put my glasses?
I don’t care if it doesn’t look fashionable, it’s comfortable!
Who the heck is calling at 9:30 p.m.?
Does anyone say please and thank you anymore?
Geez. How do you throw your body out of whack just sleeping wrong?
This scale can’t be right!
What the heck is wrong with people nowadays?
Why did I come into this room?
