Just My Opinion - By Mary Kilen
Here Comes The Postseason!
Ready or not, here comes the postseason for winter sports. The Blue Jay wrestlers are headed to their individual region qualifying tournaments this week with the girls in Minot on Friday and the boys in Killdeer on Saturday. The winter cheer team is headed to their state competition this Saturday in Bismarck. State wrestling kicks off next Thursday, Feb. 15 at the Fargodome and runs through Saturday, Feb. 17 with the individual events on Thursday and Friday for boys and girls in both Class A and B. The team duals are set for Saturday.
Girls’ basketball is also heading into the postseason this week, at least for the Class B girls. Their district tournaments begin this week with District 7 at Williston State College and District 8 at the Minot Auditorium. Both those tournaments start on Thursday, Feb. 8. That will be barely wrapping up and it will be girls’ region tournaments. The Region 3 Class A tournament starts on Monday, Feb. 19 at the Minot State Dome while the Region 4 Class B will be at the Minot Auditorium. From there, teams will be looking to advance to the State Tournaments which start on February 29 in Minot for Class A and Jamestown for Class B.
I’ve looked at the schedules and I’ve felt a little odd about all of these tournaments taking place on the same dates. For fans of either the new Class A or the old Class B, having both tournaments at the same time might be a little difficult. Spreading them out a little bit would have been nice for fans who might have enjoyed both tournaments. I know that probably would have been difficult based on the amount of time allocated for the full seasons, but that’s just this old editor’s opinion.
While girls’ basketball teams are hitting the postseason, boys basketball teams are wrapping up their seasons.
Region tournaments for boys basketball will start on March 4, right after the girls’ state tournaments wrap up. The Region 4 Class B boys will be at the Event Center in New Town, while Region 3 Class A teams will compete at the Minot State University Dome. The State Tournaments will be at Minot State for the Class B and at the Fargodome for the Class A starting on March 14.
Buckle up, it’s going to be a crazy month as all of the winter sports seasons wrap up. It’ll be a great time to be a fan with so much going on, but it will also be a crazy time with so much going on at the same time in so many places.
