Just My Opinion by Mary Kilen
The Last Time for Us
I’ve talked about volunteering at Regis Theatre in past columns. Dale and I end up working every ten months or so. Our turn was this past weekend and unfortunately, we decided it would be our last time volunteering. We have enjoyed the many years we have spent volunteering. I love seeing families coming into the theater, especially when they have little ones whose faces light up just walking in the door.
Volunteering is not a huge amount of work. You get ready to open each night, making the popcorn and making sure everything else is stocked. Then you wait for the first guests to arrive. Depending on the movie, you might be really busy or you might have a smaller crowd. We worked two different Avengers movies. They draw a crowd. I ended up figuring out how many seats there were in the theater just in case it was full! At the end of the night, it’s time to clean up and get ready for the next night. On Sunday, clean up takes a little longer as does stocking because you want everything to be ready for the next weekend’s volunteers. With a dedicated list of volunteers, you end up working maybe that one time every ten months.
It is so nice to have a theater in town and even better when they continue to get recent or new releases.
One of the best things about being able to go to the movie in Stanley is the absolute reasonable cost to go. With admission at $5 and another $5 for a popcorn and pop, I dare you to try that in any big city. You might get close if you go to an afternoon matinee, but there’s no way you could have even gotten close at an evening showing of a new release.
Thanks to all the volunteers it is possible not only for us to have a theater in town, but also allow us to keep the prices so reasonable for families to go.
Regis Theatre is always looking for more volunteers to add to their list. There are several of us, I think, that have decided it is time for us to “retire”. If you are interested in volunteering, you can contact Ruth or Hod Hysjulien for more information.
