Just My Opinion - By Mary Kilen
Not Sure What Day It Is
With the early printing deadline this week, I’ve spent the last couple of days not sure what day it is. I started putting pages together on Friday and finished them up on Sunday. I’m also writing my column on Sunday. I do all those things on Monday.
On Monday, we will have uploaded our pages to the printing plant first thing in the morning and will have finished that by about 10:30. I do that on Tuesday. We also planned to close the office at noon on Monday, also something we do on Tuesday. There really was not a lot of sense being in the office once the paper was finished. The conversations would have all been about how sorry we were, but the paper was already done and we would be happy to get it in the next week’s paper. Dale and I planned to go to Minot in the afternoon, too, so that we could hit the girls’ region volleyball tournament for the first round.
Tuesday was Veterans Day. With the holiday, I will have gone to services at 11 a.m. and that will be all of the work I do on Tuesday.
As you read this, it is now Wednesday and with any luck I am doing all of the regular Wednesday things without too much confusion. However, if you see me looking confused, be patient with me. I likely am still not sure what day it is!
A Taste of Winter
We knew it had to happen sooner or later, but I would not have minded it waiting a little longer. After a couple of fairly nice days, Friday was exactly what the forecasters had predicted.
We made it through the workday without much of the snow falling, but once it started, it came down with serious intention for a little while.
Our Buddy is usually excited to see snow. He’s the only one in the house that feels that way. He seemed a little unsure on Friday evening when he went outside. I suspect that his leg gives him more trouble with the cold. He did enjoy shoving his face into the snow once it started to pile up.
At least we didn’t get as much snow as Crosby who was declared the “big winner” by the news. They reportedly got 5.5 inches of snow.
I’m not sure I would have even minded the snow as much if it wasn’t accompanied by some of the first really cold temperatures of the season as well.
I’m not going to lie. I spent nearly all of Saturday in the house muttering with Dale about how much we “hate winter”.
I was even less amused when I got up Sunday morning to let Buddy out and my phone and both temperature gauges in the house pointed out it was single digits with a below zero feels like temperature.
Fortunately, by afternoon the sun was out and the snow was melting, at least in the back yard at our house. The front yard is in the shadow of the house and it was not trying nearly hard enough out there to melt.
Temperatures are supposed to get better this week and I know that the snow that fell on Friday will be gone before I know it. However, this reminder that winter is on the way is not necessarily high on my list of favorite things. I know it will come and I know that we will survive it, but I wouldn’t mind it waiting a while longer.
